I finished my sleeves yesterday and just cast on for the back. I had no issues using the latest sleeve instructions and don’t expect any on the back since the front was fine.
By the way, I have a complaint about my sweater. I made it with Cascade Sox yarn, which is leaving little teal pills all over whatever I wear beneath it. Argh. I wore a white long-sleeve shirt under it and had to wash the white shirt to get all the pills off. Grump, grump.
Oh no! I had a commercial sweater in high school made of brown chenille yarn and it did the same thing, and it was long enough to get brown pills all over the seat of my pants too. Ugh. (That was a flashback I wasn’t expecting today haha)
Hopefully yours will settle down after a wash or two!
Question on the sleeve increases: in the line-by-line instructions, the increases happen at Rows 3, 7, and 11. After, it says “Continue in this pattern, repeating Rows 1-14 as you increase 1 st on each edge of every 4th row”. Am I intended to always increase on PR Rows 3, 7, and 11, or to increase every 4th row (which would be 1, 5, 9, and 13 on the second pattern repeat)? I’ve been doing it the second way, but thought I should maybe check since it isn’t clear to me and thus may not be to others.
Thanks for pointing out this ambiguity in the pattern. Yes, I wanted you to continue increasing every 4th row (throughout the sleeve). I'll see if I can make that more clear.
When I made my sweater I just did a slip-stitch loop at the end of the row. But you have to make sure you twist it the right way each time (whether you're doing a k or a p into it next), so that isn't always the easiest way to do it. I like your m1 suggestion, as well as the kfb option. Since you're sewing the sleeve edges together, it doesn't matter that much how neat they are, but do you think I should be more specific about how to do the cast on?
I’ve never heard of a slip stitch loop CO, so I had to look it up. Turns out it’s what I know as a backwards loop CO! The more you know! 💫
Anyway, I tried that at first and was having trouble with it being the first stitch- it kept wanting to come undone- so I switched to increasing in the second stitch. I can’t say why I decided on kfb in particular, though.
I’ve finished the front; no pattern issues found for XL. My only note is that, based on the estimate of front, back, and sleeves each using 1/3 of the total yardage, I think the XL will take me about 2100 yards, which is closer to what I would expect for a long-sleeved cabled sweater. My row gauge is tight, but I worked the instructed number of rows (which ended up being a length that I prefer anyway!) instead of the length that many rows would have created if my gauge was correct.
Will start the sleeves tomorrow using the updated instructions.
Just checking in! I’m at the 4th repeat on the back, and I’m thinking I might make this the front instead so I can work through the neckline numbers a little sooner for you since I feel like I’m going really slowly lol. Then I can do a sleeve so that you can be ready to publish whenever without waiting for me to finish the whole sweater (which, at this pace, will likely be another month or so).
No worries! I am horrible about reading messages at inopportune times and thinking I’ll answer as soon as I can and then completely forgetting about it!
I’m going to do both sleeves at the same time, so that should speed me along a little. Even beyond finishing so you can publish, I hope to get the sweater done soon so I can wear it when fall finally arrives but before winter sets in!
*Note: For increasing the sleeve width, you will cast on 1 sts at each edge of every 4th row, increasing the amount of SS on both edges. This requires you to alternate between starting SS with a k and start SS with a p on alternating rows. It does not matter whether your SS starts with a k or with a p, only that you consistently k the p sts from the previous row and p the k sts from the previous row.
Next Row: Work SS4(6, 2, 5, 9)*, (PR Row 2) 2(2, 3, 3, 3)xs, SS4(6, 2, 5, 9).
Continue in this pattern, repeating Rows 1-14 as you increase 1 sts on each edge of every 4th row, until 74 (84, 91, 105, 119) sts are on the needles. Work even until sleeve is 15 (16, 17, 18, 19)” long, or preferred length. Bind off according to Back bind-off instructions, minding the number of SSs and PRs your sleeve has. Cut yarn.
Number of stitches after increases on the sleeve for the XS and S are off. Needs to go up one stitch or down one stitch so it will be even on both sides.
Okay, I'll take a look at that. It makes sense that if the body increases were a problem, I probably got the arm increases wrong too. Thanks for checking them!
Just got past the ribbing on the XL with the original CO number. I’ve just read through and seen that there’s an updated CO count, so I’ll probably frog and start over with that count after I give the alternate suggestion of a second increase row a try
No problem at all, really! Ribbing works up quickly enough lol yes, this seems to work correctly. I tested it where I’m at in the ribbing now and the counts are matching up correctly!
Next row (WS): SS7(5, 3, 3, 3), (PR Row 2) 5(6, 7, 8, 9)xs, SS7(5, 3, 3, 3).Large size still has a problem with being 1 st short after the increase. I will get that fixed. Eventually.
Is everyone able to work on their sweater now? I know the L size still needs the Back Panel increase row fixed, but I don't think any of you are doing an L, right?
Ooh the site is letting me comment again! Just popping in to say that I’m doing the XL, I just finished the increase row and didn’t have any issue with the stitch counts after re-starting with the larger CO. The only notes I have are 1) you can probably remove the final PM because it is already included inside the bracketed repeat; and 2) I changed the final increase to kfb because trying to work two m1 into the same space was giving me grief, so I ended the row with kfb, p, k.
I also wanted to confirm whether you are ok with me making the body length shorter.
Oh, wow. Yes, you can't do two m1s right beside each other. I didn't notice that. Great idea, doing a kfb instead.
You can make the body length whatever you want it to be! It can be a cropped sweater if you like. I only need to work out the kinks in the instructions, so do whatever you like with the rest of it!
I can't wait to see all your photos when you finish!
You're right. I see the mistake there. Is anyone making the L size? Or is it okay if I attack that problem later/tomorrow? I'm headed out right now and am going to have to sit down and refigure the math on that when I have a solid chunk of time.
Oh woops. Okay, let me go back and correct the body then. Can you take a look at the new pattern PDF I sent and see if you think the sleeves are correct now?
From what I can tell the counts are right in the increase row now. However the SS count needs to be changed to 6 for the Small in this row. The rows after are correct.
Next Row: Work SS4(5, 2, 5, 9)*, (PR Row 2) 2(2, 3, 3, 3)xs, SS4(5, 2, 5, 9).
Darn. If I'd thought more deeply about it, I'd have realized that the counts would be off. Do we need that m1? Can we omit it altogether in the increase row?
Sorry I haven’t been around! I had a devil of a time getting gauge in a fabric I liked and then spent most of the weekend getting my daughter ready for the start of middle school this week (eek!). I CO for the back today and am almost finished with the ribbing. Nothing to mention that hasn’t already been covered.
Happy first day of school! My youngest is starting her senior year next week. "Eek!" is right!
We're having some trouble with the counts following the ribbing. What size are you making? I think the M is still okay, but we're fiddling with the XS, S, L & XL. This thing is continuing to live up to it's name: BEAST.
So I finished the back last night and realized that I must have made a mistake with my swatch. It is entirely too small. Sized up my needles and am starting the sleeves today. I will redo the back at the end. So sorry for what will definitely be a delay in my finish. I will keep you updated.
Oh no. I'm so sorry about that. Is the gauge in the pattern off, then? There's no hurry on this. I'd much rather you have a happily finished project than have you rush.
I ripped my swatch back with this yarn. I will reswatch with the 5’s as well as the 6’s and let you know. I could have sworn I was on stitch gauge and a bit small for the row gauge, but it’s too much of a difference. I think it was a “me” mistake though. If that changes, I’ll let you know. Just wanted to give a quick update.
The m1 doesn’t work after the first set of SS stitches on the xs, but it does work out putting it after placing the last stitch marker as the first SS. Placing it after the first marker messes up the count in between the markers and leaves you a stitch short at the end.
Just got my yarn in this morning. The cast on number for the XS is not working out for the ribbing. It will have to go down to 103, but that will require an extra m1 in the increase row or up to 107 which will decrease the number of m1’s in the increase row.
*I’m thinking that if you put a m1 after the first set of seed stitch and before the second set, it would work pretty well with the 107 stitch cast on. That would eliminate the increases in the body of the sweater though. If you were specifically placing them there for a reason.
Right. The ribbing is a repeat of 4 sts + 3, right? You work 3 knits followed by a purl, then there's an extra set of 3 knits at the end. That would be 20 reps of 4 (100 sts) + 3 (not 4). Thanks for catching that. The body pattern needs to have 109 sts, so yes, let's add an m1 after the first set of seed stitch. There shouldn't be any other increases in the body after that. You have the 1 increase row to transition from the ribbing to the body pattern, then you just work even after that.
I'm not sure how I feel about the name of the pattern: Beautiful Beast. I originally called it "I Cursed a Lot Sweater" because... it challenged me. If you have thoughts on the name, I'd love to hear them!
Still waiting for yarn, so I worked through the cable pattern with some yarn on hand. Really can’t wait for it to get here. The cabling with the seed stitch is beautiful!
Hi all,

I just updated the pattern and emailed you all a new PDF. I am so grateful to you all!
Seed stitch edges are uneven for XS on the sleeve. Right side has 4 stitches at the beginning and 5 after the last stitch marker.

I think you might into the same issue for the large and x-large size.
