Get ready for farmers' market season with this fantastic knit bag. The bottom closes up tightly into a donut shape, so your fruits and veggies will spread out and not squish each other. Knit in strong cotton, this bag will last you many seasons to come.
The pattern will be listed here as a FREE download on April 3.

Hi all!
Just want to check in and make sure of two things:
1. Everyone got their bags finished, or if you've paused your bag it isn't because you're stuck.
2. Did I get everyone's prizes to them? I'd feel terrible if I overlooked sending something you were supposed to get! Please, please tell me if I missed anything!
Hope everyone's having a great week!
Looks like I’ll be trying this again when I can eventually get more yarn. My daughter wants me to knit one for her now! 😉
Love the colors Lou! 💙💚🤍
Realized I didn’t post a pic of my
finished bag. So just posting for the record.
Happy Friday! Anyone want to play guess how many full skeins fit in my finished market bag pictured here?
🤣🤣💕💋👍
That’s amazing 👍
Finished this pumpkin and filled it with so many skeins of yarn with room to spare! I think i need to take this bag apple picking someday. 👍🏻
Thanks! I’d like to try out the Lost Woods Beanie.
I’d love this Cardi https://wyldeandplumb.wixsite.com/wyldeandplumb/crochet-patterns?lightbox=dataItem-k4mufy1g5 And this blanket, please 💕 https://wyldeandplumb.wixsite.com/wyldeandplumb/crochet-patterns?lightbox=dataItem-k4mufy1g7 Thank you 💕❣️
Maria, you are so kind ( and fun!!)
Hi Maria,
i have choices👍 for the card: Knitters Astrology
for the pattern: Autumn Lattice Kitchen set
for the book marker: Be quiet I’m counting
I‘m so excited, thank you so very much😘
They're on the way to you @carlap2!
Ichthys Prayer Shawl
Edina Hat
University Rah-Rah Blanket
I would like the following patterns: Ichthus Prayer Shawl, Edina hat, and the University Rah-Rah Blanket. Thank you!
Thank you!
Ok it’s clear I win the prize for most questions asked 😂... so I’m now on to the linen Stitch Pattern on the handle. Just did a YouTube tutorial 😅. It says I need an odd number of stitches. So I have 56 stitches . If I bind one off at start of the first row I’ll have an odd number 55 👍🏼which sounds good. I’m wondering what happens on the next row, as I will bind off another stitch at the start of that row and then I’ll have 54 stitches which is even? 🤔.
Thanks so much Maria! This is my first ever KAL and I’ve really enjoyed it. Your market bag is such a great project made even more fun working alongside & encouraging one another along the way. 🧶😊
I hate it when things end...
But this is only the end of a project! We still have each other! ;)
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 15, 2020: LAST DAY AND PRIZES!!!
Everyone's bags look so great! I hope you're happy with how they turned out, and that they give you many years of wonderful service. I LOVE bags. I used to make fun of my mother for buying so many purses. But I get it now, Mom. I get it.
Spinning the Wheel Decide wheel today was SO MUCH FUN! I kept track every day of who posted that day, and then I entered your name in the Wheel every day that you posted. So the wheel had like 40 entries in it! It was really cool! Thank you for your fabulous participation!
Now, to string it out as long as possible...

This has been a really fun KAL, despite a bumpy start for a few people. Carla, thanks for hanging around and cheerleading, too! I hope everyone will be able to join in on May 4 for the next KAL/CAL, making Mesh Produce Bags. And as always, this thread will remain open if anyone needs ongoing help (or just a place to socialize!), and we can always chat with each other via the little round (brown) chat box in the lower right corner.
Thanks again, everyone!
M
I feel like it looks like a vegetable 😊
Yay! Finished the body of the bag. Tomorrow I start the band & then on to the straps! 😊
Everyones bags look really nice! Good job everyone!
I would like to join the mesh produce bag kal! What material would we need? Thanks!
All of your bags look fantastic!
I'm sorry I was AWOL yesterday. I hit the ground running when I got up and then never got a break. I ended the day sewing some face masks for neighbors who requested them.
Tomorrow is the last day of the KAL! Wow, that's gone quickly! I've been keeping track of who's posting each day, and I'll load up all your entries into Wheel Decide and choose first, second, third, and grand prize winners tomorrow!
The next project coming up is making Mesh Produce Bags (May 4-8), and that is both a KAL and a CAL! You can do it whether you knit or crochet! I started a new KAL/CAL project page in the Project-A-Longs forum (back one arrow from here). Hope you'll pop in and comment to let us know you can join!
Hope everyone's staying safe, warm, and healthy! Can't wait to see all the updated photos of your bags!
BTW, I have four of these (3 knit and 1 crochet) and I still want more. Will be
making at least one more during our KAL/CAL!
Looking good Nicole & Lauren! I’ve been knitting away but I also hav more to go until I get to the band.
Looks great! I am almost to 11 inches so a few more until I can start the top section...
Maria, I’d like “40 Graces for Forgiveness“ along with Drawn please. Thank you so much!🌷🌼
Good morning. Hope everyone had a peaceful & enjoyable Easter Sunday. So just to update. I’m still working on the body of the bag. It’s definitely coming along but I am behind schedule...hoping to finish the bag section today. 👍🏼 I had to get more yarn 🧶 & I’m not a fast knitter. 😊.
Happy Easter, everyone!
HAPPY EASTER!
In our house the Easter bunny (fortunately) woke up early, came to the kitchen and poured a cup of coffee, then realized she never did the Easter baskets last night! Mission successfully completed before the first kiddo got up! They're 12, 14, and 16, though. Might be time to tell them who the Easter Bunny is? (Ha ha!)
Hope everyone is having a blessed Easter weekend. Since no one is going anywhere, if you have any questions about your bags, I'll be here all day! (All week. All month. Oh dear...)
Wait! I got the bindoff part now. I repeat the same thing on the other side & stitch them together on top?
I think I have a brain fart at the shaping of the handle. I just don’t get it 🙈 I’ll retry tomorrow 😃
Just saw your reply about using a double strand. Do you think that’s the better way to go?
Actually the gray is 3 ply. And I think is pretty similar thickness to the new yarn. The white I’ve been using is 4 ply & looks a bit thicker since the plys are unraveling. 😏 I’m leaning towards continuing with the new yarn & enjoying the different textures? 🤔
Ok, new quick question! I fortuitously ended up getting some more cotton yarn today from a neighbor...yay!! Question is can I carry on & knit with the new yarn which is 2 ply? I’ve been knitting with a 4ply cotton/linen mix. Sending photos of the labels for comparison & how it knits up. It actually seems to have much nicer stitch definition. Please let me know your thoughts. Thanks 🙏
HAPPY SATURDAY!
How is everyone feeling about their progress? Do you think you'll be able to finish "on time"? It's no big deal if not, just wondering if I set the pacing up well or not.
I love seeing your bags growing! I love farmers markets, and I so hope we'll be able to have them this year. I am working on putting in more of a back-yard garden than I've done in the past, hoping to grow more of my own veggies this year. I suspect the squirrels will be my biggest nemesis.
The picture to the right is a coaster I just made. Hideous, isn't it? But it's made with the very first wool I ever spun myself!
My father is a woodworker, and several years ago he got it into his head to make a spinning wheel. I knew where this would end up.
He entered the spinning wheel into an art show and won! But he wasn't able to sell it for any decent price-- people can buy assembly-line manufactured pieces for so much cheaper than handmade (as we well know) and he didn't want to sell it cheaply. After a couple of years of me insisting I did not want to start a new hobby, the spinning wheel ended up in my car on the way home from a visit to my parents.
It has been quite the learning curve, but I've finally got the mechanism figured out! Now I'm working on making better quality fiber. But Dad's birthday is next month, and I decided to make him something out of that very first bobbin-full of "yarn".
Now Dad's talking about making a full-size loom. "Wouldn't you like to weave your own cloth?" he keeps asking me.
My father needs his energies redirected. 😂
Thanks for the feedback Nicole & Lauren. I tried and could pull it apart and break the yarn easily. So I’ll scratch that Idea. Looks like I Will hav to make it a bit shorter or hav it be a bit more colorful than I’d ideally like. 🌈 😉
Ladies, quick question...for my bag I’m using what I have here, which is mostly a roughly 50:50 cotton/linen blend #4. It’s going down pretty fast. I also hav an end of a 70%silk with 30% baby llama, also #4. Would this be as strong as the cotton/linen blend ? And do you think it would work to mix that in with the cotton/linen for this project? I don’t hav enough of any one color so I’ll be using different colors anyway.
Thanks for your thoughts 🌷
👍🏼 yes, definitely is motivating when others are working alongside you.
Hi, I’m Lauren, a late join thanks to the invite from Lou, one of my dearest knitting friends! But I started in yesterday with a very sturdy cotton... I’ve wrestled through the really tight parts. Now I’m calling it my seashell bag because every time I put it down it curls up into a different seashell shape. Maybe someday I’ll use it to carry some nice big seashells I want to shake out...
FRIDAY, APRIL 10, 2020
I think just Nic & Lou are left working on project bags, so I'm not going to post daily updates with the daily goal. We'll just keep working and posting more casually.
@visgirl We're so sorry about your family's loss. Our hearts are sad for you all.
@carlap2 I'm sorry that the bag pattern was so troublesome, but sometimes you just have to cut your losses, right? I'm sure that yarn will work up into something else lovely!
Hope that you're looking forward to a somewhat relaxing weekend!
Hi everyone, I had to give up too. My brother-in-law died this morning. These last few days have been very difficult for us. Sorry!
I ripped mine out. The stitches were going to the left and to the right. I really don't know what I did. I will be a cheerleader for everyone.
I think it would be very helpful to have a stitch count on Round 1 of the bag side. It would have really helped me to have a stitch count.
I decided to keep going and make a smaller bag.
THURSDAY, APRIL 9, 2020: BREAK DAY!
Today is a break and/or catch-up day. I think all your bags are looking great! Even if your counts are off or you're not sure you're doing it exactly right, this is a very forgiving pattern. It will still look like mesh, and you'll still have a market bag when you're done!
Hope everyone's doing well!
Not much progress today. I was making a mistake in my knitting and stitches were increasing. Good job there’s
a catch up day tomorrow! 😅
Looking good Nicole! 👍🏼
I think I will need to rip my bag out, someway my stitch count is down to 175. I have 4 sections with 41, 43, 45, and 46 stitches. The straps will not fit.
i give up!
I didn’t much accomplished today. I changed to size 7 needles because my stitches were so small.
Rest well Jasmine!
I’m on round 1 with the cable needle. I’m fighting it, why is it so hard? My stitches have never been so tight 🤦♀️
WEDNESDAY, APRIL 8, 2020: Finish up to 1/2 of the bag length.
The GIF image this morning is in honor of my poor cat, Jasmine. We took her to the vet this morning, because my daughter pointed out that Jasmine's claws had overgrown, curled back, and were growing into her paw pads. I thought Jasmine was walking funny because she's 15 years old and probably has arthritis. Turns out it was her claws. But the good news is we caught it in time and the claws had not embedded in the pads! The vet clipped them and she's back home again with no wounds! (Except for her wounded pride. She's under the sewing machine right now, giving the hairy eyeball to anyone who comes near her.)
All that to say, the emergency trip to the vet is why I'm a little later than usual to post this morning.
It looks like most everyone has gotten well into the bag. Visgirl, how is it going for you? I hope third time was a charm? I'm sorry you're having trouble getting going. Let us know if we can help!
About the riddle: How many sheep does it take to make a sweater? We got answers from Visgirl, Carla, & Lou. The correct answer (according to the joke sheet I found, anyway) is ZERO, because sheep can't knit or crochet. 😂
According to wheeldecide.com, the winner of a free book download is... Lou!!!
Lou, please select any (single-- not the Drawn Series Boxed Set, please) book from this shelf at Smashwords: https://www.smashwords.com/profile/view/MariaKeffler
(Scroll down a bit to see the books list. "Drawn" is free right now as a gift to anyone who needs reading material for the quarantine, so you can get that if you want, but pick something else as well!)
Tomorrow is a break day, so no new goals to achieve. Take the day off, catch up, or get ahead as you like!
Hope everyone is having a good week!
Looks like we’be made about the same amount of progress. I did put in a few hours today too.
And I’d say maybe one fleece of a sheep 🐑 for the sweater 🤷🏼♀️😊
Does the t2R move over on every row?
TYPO ALERT!!!
I think Carla found a typo in the pattern. Round 3 of the bag sides SHOULD READ:
Rnd 3) [t2R, k1, (yo2, k2tog)20xs] around.
I'm so sorry, and this might be part of the problem some of you were having. Without the yo2 (with a single yarn-over) your mesh will be smaller and tighter. If you've already gotten a ways along, you don't need to tear out and start over. Your mesh at the bottom will just be a little tighter. You can switch from yo to yo2 and your mesh will start being bigger from that point.
You didn't know you were being testers for this pattern, did you? *sheepish*
I just updated the pattern download so if you want to get the fixed version it's correct now on the download post (April 3). So sorry, all!
Nic, what size cable did you use?
Thanks to everyone for helping each other out with this! I hope that it's making sense. I probably should've gone over the instructions in detail before we started. My apologies. I'm fairly new to holding KALs, so I'm learning.
I'm very open to constructive criticism! If there's something I should do differently, don't hesitate to tell me. I don't cry easily. ;)
Nic, I always knew you like to live dangerously!💪
Nic, how many stitches did you have after the decrease round?
Cool! I’ll try that👍
Thanks! last time I stayed on the dpns for 65 sts on each needle, is that right?
This will be my 3rd (and final!) attempt😳
I don’t think it takes any sheep to knit a sweater, sheep can’t knit! ( and today neither can I!)
I have a couple of questions on round 2of the bag sides, am I basically dropping one of the yarn overs? Round 4, do I work the parentheses 20 times than the t2R? I am struggling with the pattern.
I understood it as knitting them together, don’t mind me 😀 I like my 3knit stitch edge, which is a bit uneven, but hey, it’s unique 🤪
TUESDAY, APRIL 7, 2020: Work to 1/4 of the bag's height.
Once you get past the incredibly ruffly increase rows and you get some length/height onto your bag you'll start to see the mesh emerge more clearly, and it won't feel so tight and twisty!
Let the team know if you're having any trouble with the bag so far! Hope the difficulties yesterday are getting worked out.
Just for a little fun, let's see who knows the answer to this riddle:
Wool is a favorite material to use in yarn, and everyone knows that wool yarn comes from sheep. But do you know how many sheep it takes to make a whole sweater?
Everyone who answers (regardless whether you got it right or not) gets entered to win a free book download from Smashwords. Click the link (Smashwords) to see the books that are available. Only the Drawn Series Boxed Set is not available as a prize. And it's okay to answer the riddle in the same post where you post your progress photo today.
Hope you're all well, safe, and staying sane!
Sure! I think you're looking at Round 3 under "Bag Sides", right? The instructions are: Rnd 3) [t2R, k1, (yo, k2tog)20xs] around.
You only do what's in (parentheses) 20 times, but you repeat what's in the [brackets] all the way around the bag. So you repeat the [bracketed instructions] six times. You'll do a t2R (which is essentially a tiny 2-stitch cable), then knit 1, then for the next 40 stitches you do a yarn over followed by a knit 2 together. You'll repeat that from the t2R six times around the body of the bag.
It's totally fine to massage this a little if for some reason you didn't end up with exactly the right number of stitches after all the increase rows at the bottom. If you have to do a couple of decreases or increases to get your repeats right, no one will ever see them. The sides of this bag are so mesh-y (because of the yarn-over-twice rows) that people will only see mesh when they look at it.
Hope that helps! If not, let me know so we can try again!
I have a question. My pattern reading abilities are limited.😉 I just want to make sure that I understand it correctly. 😊
once I start the bag sides, do I do both the t2R and then k3tog & yo2 all 20 times and then k3tog after? I’m not sure how much of it is repeated 20times. If you could please break it down for me. That would be great. Thanks 🙏
I’m going to pull it out. Maybe I should use a bigger needle or a smaller cable? My cable choices are 24 or 32
So, every t2r we decrease 1st, correct?
It’s a mess! I can’t straighten out the cord and I can’t get the right angle to k3tog
Once I transferred to the larger circular needles this went really fast. 👍🏼😊. Only thing is...I seem to have acquired some extra stitches. I have close to 300. Not sure what I did. Is that going to be a problem for the next step? 🤔
Hi from Barbados! So here’s my progress for today on this super cute market bag. We’re on complete lock down here (no stores), so I’m using yarn & supplies I have on
hand. I didn‘t have double pins so I used my smallest circular needles & “massaged” the first few rounds. Please don’t look too closely 😉
This is my progress for today. I found out the hard way that magic loop does not work for this project. I also found out that you can not change to circular needles until the bottom can spread out at the bottom of the needles.
MONDAY, APRIL 6, 2020: CAST ON!
Let's get this party started! Today is the day to cast on your bag. You only cast on 12 stitches to start, but then you increase pretty rapidly. The fast increases make the center bottom of the bag super thick and "ruffly". But when you've got your bag full of produce that's what helps create the donut shape at the bottom, so your stuff doesn't all stack up on top of each other.
Let us know if you have any trouble getting started!
This is my yarn. It was from a friend’s stash. I think I am going to use yellow for the top.
Hmm, oh well! This is my first time knitting from a cone. The ball band says it’s for knitting machines and weaving looms? Colors are Cream & Brown and the price was free👍
Good morning! I’m in. I’m trying to figure out how to read the 6 comments above!
SUNDAY, APRIL 5, 2020: STARTING THE KAL! Introductions & Yarn Photos
Good morning, knitters!
We have a very small group so far, primarily because I have failed to adequately advertise this KAL. I seem to be in long-term vacation mode during this period of isolation. On one hand it's been great for relaxing and getting lots of home projects done. (I painted rocks for my garden this week!) But on the other hand, I'm not keeping up with stuff I really should be doing.
So, we may be a tiny circle of knitters this time!
We'll do things a little differently this time, and rather than having prizes every day I'll keep track of who posts each day, and each day you post you'll get an entry into the final prize awards at the end. We'll do first-, second-, and third prizes, for number of posts (up to one per day-- multiple posts are fantastic, but don't count as extra entries), and we'll have a drawing for a Grand Prize.
First Prize: Three Free Patterns from Wylde & Plumb
Second Prize: Two Free Pattern from Wylde & Plumb
Third Prize: One Free Pattern from Wylde & Plumb
Grand Prize: A Magnetic Bookmark, Card of Your Choice, & a Free Pattern from Wylde & Plumb
Looking forward to seeing who's all in and what yarn you'll be using for your Market Bag!
APPLE-BOTTOM MARKET BAG PATTERN: Free through April 15, 2020
Click the link below to download the Apple-Bottom Market Bag pattern. The KAL starts on Sunday, April 5!
Email issues (hopefully!) resolved. I’m in
I'm in.
