We'll crochet one (or more!) of these cute Tyndal Mini Messenger Bags in June! And here's how they look on the inside, if you're adventurous enough to line them with some nice fabric.
You'll need about 350 yards of worsted weight cotton yarn, and a size 7 (4.5mm) crochet hook for this project.
Here's the schedule:
June 11: Pattern will be made free to download here.
June 13: Introductions & Yarn
June 14: Cast on the front panel.
June 15: Finish the front panel.
June 16: Cast on the back panel.
June 17: Finish the back panel.
June 18: Attach the panels & make the strap.
June 19: Make the flap & sew in lining (if desired).
June 20: Finished photos.
Comment below if you want to join in this CAL! Hope to crochet with you soon!
I love your bag.
I just found a scrap of this yellow today and finished off the bag! I made the strap long enough to be a cross body bag
So cute! Good job daughter!
This is my Ravelry project page.

My bag is finished! I will line it next week. I am going to use this fabric for the lining.
My daughter lined the bag for me and I put a button on it! ("If you like it then you shoulda put a button it... If you like it..." 😂 )
Had a lot of fun with you gals! Thanks for joining in! And if you're still working, we'll keep going here!
Maria
My strap isn't right so I'll be starting over. I forgot to follow the pattern.
I can barely knit, so a sweater is out of the question for me lol. Will keep working on my bag. I'm curious about the snow stitch? Is there another name for it, the only other pattern I found that uses it is your headband! (I hope you'll be relisting it on Etsy)
Almost done!
I will not be participating in the sweater KAL.
Thank you Wheel Decide 😉 and Wylde & Plumb 💜 Let me have a looksie so I can choose a digital card and a crochet pattern...
SATURDAY, JUNE 20, 2020: Last Day!
How's everyone doing on their bags? I realize not everyone is close to finishing, especially if you joined in late. I'm more than happy to keep this thread going as long as anyone needs it. And anyway, all the CAL/KAL project threads are always open, so feel free to pop in on any one of them anytime.
I did not get my bag lined yesterday. When I do I'll post a picture.
Let's do a big, happy final prize for today! How about a pattern of your choice from either KNIT Patterns or CROCHET Patterns above, and a card from CARDS Etc above (either a print card that I'll send to you, or a digital file you can use to print as many of your own cards as you like)? And the winner is...
@KelleJ!!! I'm especially glad Wheel Decide picked you, Kelle, since so many of the Wylde & Plumb projects are knit projects, and you've been such a wonderful cheerleader for those even though you don't knit (YET). Tell me which pattern and card (print or digital) you'd like to have!
Our next project will be to knit the Ripe Peaches Tee, July 11-18.
Does anyone here think they might join in? I'm wondering now if maybe this one is a little too ambitious? Do you all prefer smaller projects, or would you like to try this one? For the week of the KAL we'll just finish the front panel. The back is exactly like it, but without the neck separation, so you can finish that up on your own time. Let me know what you think.
Thank you so much for joining in on the Tyndal Mini Messenger Bag CAL! You're a very fun group and I'm grateful for all of you!
Maria, how long did you make your handles?
I didn’t get to crochet much today. I am still working on the strap.
Do I keep going across the top? Plus, I don't understand how to begin the strap.
Wow your daughter's projects are too cute. Love your Bag.
I'm going with a more square bag, about 6.5"
Missed yesterday’s entry, but not much progress right now. Too much gardening, yard sales and orders to fulfill. 🤣🙈 I’ll keep limping behind 🤣💕
FRIDAY, JUNE 19, 2020: Happy Juneteenth! (Finish your bag!)
Good morning, crocheters!
My husband and I watched "13th" last night on Netflix. Aaron's family hosted an exchange student from Ghana when the kids were in high school, and "Big John" (to distinguish him from Aaron's little brother John) never left the states at the end of his exchange. He has become an adopted sixth sibling to the family. He has encouraged us to read and watch a number of excellent books and movies (such as "13th") to better understand what's going on in our country right now with the racial conflicts we're experiencing. I really recommend the movie, if you're looking for something to watch.
How are your bags coming along? Apologies for the places in the pattern where we've found errors or omissions. @KelleJ just pointed out that one cannot slip stitch 3 times in the same stitch. Nope, we sure can't. So please ignore that when you're slip-stitching around your panels, and just do a single sl st in each corner.
Today let's see if we're able to finish up the crocheting! I completed mine, except for putting a button on it and a lining in it:
The pattern does not tell you to do a border around the flap, but I chose to. It just continues the (2sc, sk 1) pattern you did around the panels.
I'm going to try to do the button and lining today, but my older daughter has taken over my sewing machine and surrounding area. She's been making Baby Yodas and Mandalorians:
Why is she making these? Just because.
Hope everything's going well, and have a great Friday!
Can we put 3 sl sts into the same sl st?
ok, I'm started, 16 rows in, but I started over with a 3.5 mm hook to meet gauge. I'll get a pic tomorrow after I add the navy blue - too dark to do tonight lol
I decided to crochet the strap separately and sew it on the bag.
I am starting the strap.
I just remembered about the cal!
I am really to put my pieces together.
THURSDAY, JUNE 18, 2020: Attach the panels & make the strap.
How's everyone doing on their flaps? I had to take mine out the first time because, like Kelle's, it wasn't long enough without doing a few no-decrease rows to start out. I didn't appreciate how the shorter top on the square bag would create a shorter flap. Live and learn!
See how far you can get today with finishing the flap, attaching the panels, and working on the strap. The strap takes a surprising amount of yarn. For a long strap you will use up most of a ball.
Let's have another prize today! Randomly selected from everyone who's participating, Wheel Decide says that the winner is...
@nicoleb
Congrats! Please pick a pattern of your choice from the KNIT Patterns or CROCHET Patterns pages.
Hope everyone's having a good week!
Yes love them
On the flap I got to 17 stitches way to soon
Pretty
Here's mine! I love this color. It's Rose Quartz from Crafter's Secret Cotton (Hobby Lobby).
Front and back are finished. I have to redo the button hole, it is not in the center.
Finally finished my front piece. See an edging around it to do yet. Do you like my crazy stripes?
I don’t see in the instructions where it says to crochet the edging around the flap. I can see it in the picture.
WEDNESDAY, JUNE 17, 2020: Finish through flap.
Good morning! A little change from what's on the schedule at the top. The pattern calls for you to do the flap before the strap, so let's try to get finished through the flap today.
If you're making your bag square instead of rectangle, I recommend working the first 5-6 rows of the flap without any decreases. I learned the hard way this week that if you start decreasing right away your flap ends up too short. You can also do this for a rectangular bag, but be careful you don't end up with a flap that's longer than your bag is deep!
Also, a note on the pattern. You do the first row of the flap working across the WS, only in the front loops. Starting with Row 2 you go back to working through both loops.
On a personal note I'm taking my son to the orthodontist this morning, and hoping the braces are coming off! Keep your fingers crossed!

Back panel progress
I started the back panel.
TUESDAY, JUNE 16, 2020: Start the back panel
Now you'll make a second panel just like the first one. Easy-peasy!
Today is also a PRIZE DAY! The names of everyone who has joined the CAL got put into the Wheel Decide wheel, and today's winner is...
@Clara Drummond!
@Clara, please take a look at the KNIT Patterns and CROCHET Patterns menus above, and pick a pattern you'd like to have as a prize. Thanks for joining us, and congrats!
Hope everyone's having a good week so far!
I finished the front.
MONDAY, JUNE 15, 2020: Finish Front Panel
Looks like everyone's off to a good start! Hope no one's had any struggles yet. This is a pretty simple pattern, and it's very easy to customize it however you like. I've decided to make mine a square this time, instead of a rectangle. So I did 30 rows instead of 44 on my panel. Here's how mine came out:
If you're working ahead, just make the back panel exactly as you did the front.
Have a great Monday!
Got started!
I am making a solid color bag. Could I crochet around the bag with out cutting the yarn and working in the ends?
I have started!
SUNDAY, JUNE 14, 2020: START THE FRONT PANEL
I just realized that in the schedule I used some knitting terminology ("Cast on..."). Oops! I tend to be more of a knitter than a crocheter, so bear with me as we work with our hooks this time!
Please check out my post above, where I talked about Row 1. Take note that although you made a foundation row with 27 sts, the next row (Row 1) increases to 31 sts. If the brackets & parentheses in the written pattern are confusing I wrote it out in the post above.
After the increase row it gets much easier-- everything else is just a repeat of Row 2 until you finish the panel.
I decided to make my bag a square this time instead of a rectangle. If you want to do that too, I worked to 30 rows instead of 44. Everything else will be just the same as in the pattern.
About prizes... we're a pretty small group this time, unless we have some more people join us today. How about we do a random participation prize half way through (on Tuesday, June 16) and then another at the end? What kind of prizes do you most enjoy? We can do free patterns (check out the KNIT and CROCHET Pattern tabs from the menu above), free ebooks (take a look at my Amazon shelf), or physical prizes like greeting cards and postcards (see the CARDS, Etc. tab from the menu above). I'm happy to do whatever you all prefer! You can let me know in a comment or via the chat button in the bottom right corner of the screen.
So glad you're here, and I'm excited to see your progress on the bag!
It'll be mostly denim with Navy trim. I may do different widths of stripes on the front with the white and navy. Not sure if I want them all symmetrical or varying widths. Have to decide quickly, tho.
Oh! I found it. I was so excited I didn't see the link in the comments. Here's the yarn I'll use. I love this yarn.
I just found you today (6.13). Did I miss the free pattern? It says 3.50 on the links above. I love the bag and can't wait to make it!
In case anyone's working ahead...
The first row can be a little tricky if you aren't paying attention. You're turning 27 sts into 31. The repeat in Row 1 might be a little confusing, so I wrote it out without the brackets inside the parentheses if that's helpful to anyone:
Row 1) (2scs in next st, sk 1, 2scs in next st, sk 1, 2scs in next st)5xs, sk 1, sc in last st. {31 sts} Ch 1, turn.
In effect you're increasing, skipping 1, increasing, skipping 1, increasing, then starting the instructions in parentheses over again without skipping 1.
Hope that's helpful!
I am Carla and I live in West Virginia with my cat, Purl. She loves yarn! I am a retired teacher.
Until recently I was my mother’s caregiver.
JUNE 13, 2020: Introductions & Yarn
Welcome to the first day of our June CAL! If you haven't downloaded the pattern yet, it's right up in the message above this one. Today we'll introduce ourselves and our yarn.
I'm Maria, and I live in Arlington VA. My main job for the last decade and a half has been "Mom". My kids are almost 17, almost 15, and 12. I also live with a husband, and a tortoiseshell cat who is amazingly healthy at 15 years old.
I'll be using Crafters Secret Cotton in Rose Quartz and Weathered Teal.
Can't wait to see who's in for this one!
THURSDAY, JUNE 11, 2020: FREE PATTERN DOWNLOAD

The pattern will stay free here through the end of the CAL (June 20, 2020).
Can't wait to get started!
Just a few more days...
@Gail West & @nicoleb I'm glad you're here! Please feel free to invite any of your crocheting friends to join the CAL. I cannot advertise the CAL in any crocheting groups because of self-promotion rules, but if you're so inclined to post about it in a group that would be great! Just grab the link to this page from the address bar at the top. Looking forward to getting started!
I would love to do this CAL.
Coming up in just a week and a half! Comment and let us know you'll be joining the CAL!
Oh! This is cute ❣️
