I taught a crochet class via Zoom meeting last night, and after all the other ladies got going on their projects I decided to try a new stitch I'd been thinking about while they worked. It turned out beautifully!
This cowl came off the hooks after just 30 minutes, worked up in super bulky (6) yarn on a size K hook. If I did it again I'd make it a little wider and maybe use an L or M hook.
30-Minute Cowl Pattern
Materials:
1 skein Heartfelt Heritage Yarn (Stitch Studio by Nicole) in Arctic White
Size K Crochet Hook
Abbreviations:
ch(s) -- chain(s)
sc(s) -- single crochet(s)
sk -- skip
sl st -- slip stitch
Instructions:
Foundation Row/Round: Ch 2, then sc in the first ch (2nd ch from hook). [Pull up a loop in the same ch where you just worked a sc, and make a ch with that loop. Make a second ch in the ch you just made. Yarn over and pull through both loops on hook to make a sc. Make another sc in the same ch.] Rep [bracketed instructions] until foundation row/round is desired length.
Make your Foundation Row/Round as long as you'd like, making sure you can slip the piece over your head after it's joined in the round.
Being careful not to twist your Foundation Row/Round, join it in the round by making a sc in the back loop only of the second sc of the Foundation Row/Round. You'll tuck the little "tag" made by the first sc under when you weave in the ends.
The rest of the cowl is worked in a spiral, working in back loops only:
Skip the next sc and make 2scs in the next sc (always the 2nd sc of the pair made in the same stitch of the previous round).
Work until you run out of yarn or until the cowl is the length you prefer. End by cutting the yarn and pulling it through the last stitch made. Weave in ends to hide the spiral shifts.
If you enjoyed this project, here are a couple of other crochet projects from Wylde & Plumb:
The Tyndal Mini Messenger Bag uses the same stitch pattern as the 30-Minute Cowl, but working through both loops:
The Mapling Shawl is all double-crochets, and makes a comforting, snuggly wrap.
Hope everyone is tucking in comfortably and staying safe during these strange times. Happy yarning!
