Twiddle Muffs are really useful for people who suffer dementia, as these decorative sleeves offer something to play with and pick at which can be very helpful to keep patients from picking apart their own clothing, fingernails, or things their caregivers would prefer not be fiddled with.
My mother-in-law has suffered dementia for several years now, and I've been thinking to make her a Twiddle Muff. I had just enough yarn leftover from the Caron Latte Cake (in Velvet Teal) I used to make a Beryl Flutter Shawl, so I decided to give Twiddle Muffs a go.
They couldn't be easier!
Here are the instructions for how I did mine, but you can make your Twiddle Muff however you like. Get creative with your edgings and what you attach to the muff. Just remember it is IMPERATIVE that everything is secure and will not come off with picking or chewing. Dementia patients should be treated with the same care as small children; you do not want to present a choking hazard.
Final Size = ~ 11" long x 5" diameter
Materials:
100-150 yards soft, bulky yarn
Size J crochet hook
Snippets of various ribbons
Buttons, Jewels, and/or Charms with unbroken eyes (no twist-open jump rings or jewelry links)
Yarn Needle
Abbreviations:
ch(s) -- chain(s)
hdc(s) -- half double crochet(s)
sc(s) -- single crochet(s)
sk -- skip
sl st(s) -- slip stitch(es)
st(s) -- stitch(es)
xs -- times
Instructions:
Foundation hdc 32; or ch 33 and hdc in 2nd ch from hook and every ch across [32 sts].
Join in a circle and hdc in the back loop only of every st, working in a spiral (do not join and "step up" with a ch every round). Work until tube measures about 10" long. End with a sc followed by a sl st.
Make a bobble border around the round you just finished: (pull up a loop about 1.5" high, yo)4xs, pull up another loop yo and pull through all 9 loops on the hook, sk 2 sts and sc in the next st. Rep around. If you like you can make a dongle that hangs lower by doing ch-3, make bobble, ch-3, make bobble, ch-3, sl st or sc to edge. Cut yarn and finish off end.
Reattach yarn on the opposite end and (ch-8, sk 1, sl st) around.
I continued without cutting the yarn from this point, and I did a sl-st trail all over the Twiddle Muff.
Attach whatever twiddle-toys you like, keeping in mind that you must knot, knot, and knot again before and after sewing these pieces on. It's a good idea to occasionally check the Twiddle Muff to make sure nothing has come loose.
We'd love to see any Twiddle Muffs you make! Please post a photo below!
