Kelle's Mesh Produce Bag (Crochet Pattern)

A few months ago I worked up a set of Mesh Produce Bags using No. 10 crochet cotton, and they've been a popular pattern. (Possibly because it's an always-free pattern? Could be.)

They're great! I use them all the time and completely avoid collecting more plastic bags from the fruits and vegetables aisle. And they only weight about 1/2 an ounce each, so they don't add appreciably to the weight of the produce when it's on the scale.

But. Not everyone knits. (Why, I'll never know.) My knitless friend Kelle asked for a crochet version of the Mesh Produce Bag.

So, without further ado... drum roll please...

Here it is, Kelle! Your crocheted Mesh Produce Bag!

Finished size of pictured bag is about 6" wide by 7" high when relaxed.

Materials:

Aunt Lydia's No. 10 Crochet Cotton

Sizes B & J Crochet Hooks

Ch 21 (or any even number +1) with the size J hook.

Row 1) sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across. [20 sts] Ch 1, turn.

Row 2) sc in each st across. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 6" or your desired bag height.

Switch to size B hook.

Turning Row) working in back loops only make 2scs in each st across. [40 sts]

Switch to size J hook again.

Next Row) ch 1, sc in every other st across. [20 sts] Ch 1, turn.

Repeat Row 2 until the piece measures 12", or until the piece following the Turning Row equals the piece prior to the Turning Row.

Fold bag in half at the Turning Row with the unworked front loops facing to the outside of the bag. Change to the size B hook again and sc evenly down the sides of the bag, to close them together.

Sc across the unworked loops of the Turning Row.

Sc evenly up the sides of the bag to close them together.

Make a chain about 16" long. Cut yarn and knot the end of the chain. Weave the chain through the top row of the bag (all around the circle) and pull to close.

Hope everyone enjoys making and using this bag. Please come back and post a photo if you make it!

Thanks. I love the idea of changing the color of the drawstring!
